Self-styled social media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj was placed under formal arrest by Delhi Police on Saturday. The action was taken in connection with an assault case registered at Jantar Mantar.
The 22-year-old accused was produced before a local metropolitan magistrate court. Subsequently, he was remanded to one-day police custody for sustained interrogation.
Earlier, the suspect was detained by a special team from his residence in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district. He was later brought to the national capital for formal booking. The development comes after mounting public pressure.
The Video Controversy and Assault Allegations
The case against Bhardwaj originated during a public demonstration held at Jantar Mantar. The accused had confronted attendees and allegedly participated in violent physical scuffles.
Shortly after the incident, a video clip was widely circulated across social media platforms. In the recording, Bhardwaj was seen openly bragging about the physical altercation.
Specifically, he claimed on camera that he had fractured the victim’s skull during the clash. The video triggered severe public indignation across civil rights forums.
Escalating Outcry and Political Demonstrations
Widespread outrage was witnessed across the capital over delays in taking the influencer into custody. Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) organized joint demonstrations demanding immediate administrative action.
Furthermore, political leaders joined the agitation to demand the influencer’s arrest. Aazad Samaj Party MP Chandrashekhar Azad and civil society delegations met senior police officials.
During these meetings, a strict 72-hour ultimatum was delivered to the Delhi Police brass, as reported by The New Indian Express.
Protesters argued that public impunity could not be granted to online creators boasting of physical violence. Therefore, surveillance operations were intensified by tracking teams across western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR.
Expanding Investigation and Police Interrogation
Following his detention on Friday afternoon, Bhardwaj was subjected to preliminary questioning by investigative officers. He was officially arrested on Saturday morning after incriminating digital evidence was analyzed.
During the court hearing, custodial interrogation was sought by police prosecutors. Investigators stated that digital recording devices used to create the provocative clips needed to be recovered.
In addition, potential accomplices who accompanied the accused to the demonstration are being identified. The magistrate accepted the prosecution’s request and granted a 24-hour custodial remand.
Meanwhile, fresh legal complications have surfaced for the accused. Separate complaints have been submitted against him for inflammatory online statements. An additional FIR has also been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in an unrelated complaint.
Police Stance on Public Accountability
Senior police officials reiterated that law and order would be upheld impartially. Strict monitoring of hate speech and offline violence generated by online influencers was assured.
Investigators emphasized that statements boasting of violence on social media are treated as direct admissions in court proceedings. Bhardwaj will be questioned further regarding the origin of the clash and his associated networks.
He is scheduled to be produced back before the designated court upon the expiry of his remand on Sunday.
