A controversial audio recording released by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil has triggered an open rift within Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti coalition. The leaked tape allegedly features discussions claiming that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde accepted Rs 500 crore from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to end the Maratha reservation stir.

Jarange claimed that senior BJP leaders personally informed him about the alleged financial transaction. According to political reporting published by The Economic Times, the explosive claim immediately outraged leaders of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Party functionaries demanded an immediate public clarification from the senior coalition partner. Therefore, the audio controversy brought simmering distrust between the two ruling allies into full public view.

Shinde Faction Alleges Calculated Plot to Marginalize Leader

Senior leaders within Eknath Shinde’s party accused sections of the BJP of conspiring with Jarange to destroy Shinde’s political credibility. Veteran Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam launched a blistering attack during a press briefing in Mumbai.

Kadam alleged that internal coalition detractors hatched a calculated conspiracy to finish a prominent Maratha leader. As detailed by The New Indian Express, a delegation of Shiv Sena legislators met senior police officials to demand criminal action. The leaders questioned why Jarange selectively targeted Shinde while sparing top BJP ministers. Consequently, Sena lawmakers warned that undermining their party chief will damage coalition unity across Maharashtra.

Chief Minister Fadnavis Orders Forensic Inquiry to Calm Ally

Facing fierce pressure from its key partner, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis moved quickly to contain the political fallout. The Chief Minister ordered the state cyber cell and forensic laboratory to investigate the authenticity of the viral audio clip.

Fadnavis assured the Shinde camp that investigators will expose anyone who fabricated or doctored the recording. As reported by The Times of India, BJP spokespersons also dismissed Jarange’s claims as baseless political mischief. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray seized upon the controversy to attack the government. Coverage by The Times of India India News noted that Thackeray termed the alleged Rs 500 crore transaction a murder of democracy. As a result, opposition parties demanded a court-monitored probe into the financial allegations.

Simmering Turf Wars Ahead of Crucial Municipal Polls

Political analysts observe that the audio dispute reflects deeper structural friction within the ruling alliance. Relations between the BJP and Shinde have remained strained since Fadnavis reclaimed the Chief Minister’s post following the 2024 assembly elections.

Both parties have clashed repeatedly over guardian minister appointments, development fund allocations, and Legislative Council seat-sharing. Furthermore, local units are locked in fierce turf wars across Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Mumbai ahead of upcoming civic polls. On the other hand, Shinde loyalists fear that the BJP wants to weaken their grassroots bargaining power before municipal elections begin. Nevertheless, both parties remain bound together by legislative arithmetic in Mumbai. The latest audio row confirms that mutual suspicion continues to shadow the ruling coalition’s public facade of unity.
