Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay faces severe political backlash following the release of five terror convicts on parole. The state prison department sanctioned 60 days of ordinary leave for the life-term prisoners on Saturday. The convicts are serving sentences in the Coimbatore Central Prison for their roles in the 1998 serial bombings.

The decision ignited fierce condemnation from national and regional political parties across the state. According to administrative orders reported by The New Indian Express, the inmates walked out of prison under local police monitoring. The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration approved the release on medical and humanitarian grounds. Therefore, opposition leaders accused the new government of compromising national security for short-term political gains.

Horrific 1998 Terror Attack Targeted L K Advani Rally

The controversy revives dark memories of one of Tamil Nadu’s deadliest terror attacks. On February 14, 1998, 12 coordinated bomb explosions rocked 11 commercial locations across Coimbatore. The synchronized blasts killed 58 citizens and left over 200 people critically injured.

The banned radical outfit Al-Ummah orchestrated the attacks to target senior BJP leader L. K. Advani during an election rally. Advani survived after his flight to the city suffered an unexpected delay. As detailed by The Indian Express, specialized anti-terror courts convicted the perpetrators following an exhaustive trial. Consequently, victims’ families expressed deep anguish over extended temporary release orders granted to unrepentant bomb conspirators.

Opposition Alleges Political Payback for Minority Alliance

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched sharp attacks against the Chief Minister in Chennai. State BJP leaders demanded the immediate cancellation of the 60-day parole order. The party alleged that the government granted clemency to please the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

The IUML had snapped its decades-old alliance with the DMK in June to support Vijay’s newly formed ministry. Reporting by ThePrint highlighted opposition claims that the parole decision served narrow electoral calculations. BJP state functionaries asserted that releasing terror convicts disrespects the memory of 58 innocent blast victims. In addition, right-wing organizations warned of statewide protest demonstrations outside district collectorates. As a result, the controversy has created Chief Minister Vijay’s first major law-and-order confrontation.

Administration Defends Leave Under Standard Prison Norms

State government representatives defended the temporary release, asserting that prison authorities followed statutory administrative rules. Officials pointed out that the convicts had spent over 25 continuous years behind bars.

Medical officers had recommended temporary leave to treat chronic age-related ailments and family emergencies. Furthermore, prison authorities stated that the convicts must report regularly to local police stations during their parole. On the other hand, legal commentators questioned whether convicts involved in mass-casualty bombings should qualify for extensive two-month leaves. Moreover, the political storm threatens to disrupt legislative harmony ahead of upcoming civic ballots. The intense dispute highlights the delicate political balance facing actor-politician Vijay’s young administration in Tamil Nadu.
