YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy made an unexpected political U-turn on Sunday. He expressed deep regret over supporting the central government’s controversial 2023 Election Commission law in Parliament. The legislation had removed the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the statutory panel that selects election commissioners.
Jagan’s surprise remarks quickly sparked national speculation about whether he has finally chosen a side against the ruling coalition. According to political reporting by The Indian Express, Jagan admitted that his party made a grave error by backing the measure. Therefore, the regional leader broke his long-standing silence on institutional disputes to demand urgent electoral reforms.
Demanding Chief Justice’s Reinstatement on Appointment Panel
The YSRCP chief called upon the Union government to amend the appointment framework immediately. He argued that the current selection formula heavily tilts power toward the ruling party executive. Under the existing mechanism, the Prime Minister and a nominated Union Cabinet minister hold an automatic majority over the Leader of Opposition.
Jagan asserted that this skewed setup severely undermines public confidence in the Election Commission of India. As reported by Asianet Newsable, he insisted that restoring the Chief Justice of India to the selection committee remains essential. Furthermore, he noted that ongoing controversies regarding deleted voter rolls have shaken voter faith nationwide. Consequently, he aligned his party with demands recently raised by the Kerala Assembly and civil society groups.
Break From Traditional Issue-Based Support to NDA
The public reversal marks a decisive shift in Jagan Mohan Reddy’s national political posture. During his tenure as Chief Minister from 2019 to 2024, Jagan maintained warm, cooperative ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His party consistently voted in favor of crucial government bills in the Rajya Sabha.
However, the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh shifted dramatically after the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) joined the central NDA government. As highlighted by NDTV, TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu now serves as a key pillar of the ruling coalition in New Delhi. Meanwhile, YSRCP leaders faced increasing heat from state investigative agencies at home. In addition, Jagan observed rising public anger over electoral roll manipulation under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. As a result, Jagan decided to distance his party from the NDA’s controversial institutional policies.
Strategic Signals for National Opposition Alignments
Political strategists view Jagan’s open criticism as a calculated signal toward the national opposition. While the YSRCP previously maintained equal distance from both national blocs, his latest stance mirrors the INDIA alliance’s core democratic platform.
On the other hand, state BJP leaders criticized Jagan’s statement as opportunistic posturing following his state assembly defeat. Moreover, TDP leaders claimed that Jagan’s sudden concern for institutional independence lacks moral credibility. Nevertheless, Jagan’s open rebellion on poll panel transparency denies the NDA reliable issue-based support from southern regional parties. His sharp shift indicates that broader federal realignments may reshape national parliamentary debates in the coming sessions.
