An executive magistrate in New Delhi ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Sunday morning. The court also freed senior party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. Delhi Police had held the three youth organizers in preventive custody for nearly 24 hours. Officers detained them on Saturday morning straight from their commercial flight at Delhi airport.

The trio walked out of detention after police produced them before the Special Executive Magistrate at Delhi Cantt. According to live court reporting by The Hindu, supporters gathered outside the police station to welcome the released leaders. The detentions had disrupted their planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The party had called the rally to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over deleted voter rolls.

Court Imposes One-Year Peace Bond Condition

The magistrate released the three leaders on a standard personal bond. Under the order, the activists must ensure they do not breach the peace for one year. Legal representatives for the party accepted the bond terms to secure their immediate freedom.

Party leaders welcomed the court ruling with sharp criticism of administrative overreach. As confirmed by The Times of India, defense lawyers argued that the detentions lacked legal justification. Furthermore, the defense team asserted that peaceful assembly remains a core constitutional right. Therefore, the leaders maintained that their agitation against poll panel irregularities would continue across other democratic forums.

The release followed intense legal pressure from civil society and opposition groups. On Saturday evening, CJP advocates filed an urgent habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court. The petition challenged the secret confinement of the organizers and demanded their immediate presentation before a court.

Legal portal LiveLaw reported that advocates questioned the airport detention without formal arrest memos. Meanwhile, senior jurists and the Supreme Court Bar Association flagged the detention of junior advocates in the capital. Consequently, public pressure mounted quickly on police authorities to end unlawful detentions across city holding centres.

Bereaved Dipke Departs for Maharashtra Rites

Personal sorrow clouded the morning release for Abhijeet Dipke. While he remained in police custody on Saturday, his 85-year-old grandmother, Savitribai Shankar Dipke, passed away in Maharashtra. She breathed her last at their native village of Santuk Pimpri in Hingoli district after an extended illness.

Police restrictions had prevented Dipke from contacting his grieving parents during the custody period. As reported by NDTV, Dipke cancelled all public engagements in Delhi immediately after his release. He booked the earliest flight to Maharashtra to attend her final rites. On the other hand, the CJP affirmed that its campaign against voter list revisions will proceed with fresh public rallies across the country.
