A speeding truck rammed into a large gathering of pilgrims in Gwalior on Sunday morning, killing 13 devotees. Nearly 40 others sustained critical injuries in the horrific collision. The tragic crash took place around 1:30 am on Sheetlamata Mandir Road in Madhya Pradesh.
Hundreds of worshippers had gathered along the roadside to visit the revered Sheetla Mata temple during the festive weekend. However, an out-of-control truck carrying sacks of paddy descended down a steep slope from Chhinor. According to official accident reports published by The Hindu, the heavy vehicle suffered suspected brake failure. The truck plowed directly into the seated crowd before crashing violently into a temple wall. Therefore, chaotic cries for help echoed through the darkened religious shrine area.
Emergency Teams Rush Victims to Gwalior Hospitals
Local residents and fellow devotees acted quickly to pull trapped victims from under the truck wheels. Rescue teams and district police units arrived within minutes to clear scattered debris.
Ambulances transported the injured to the trauma center at Jaya Arogya Hospital in Gwalior. As detailed by The Indian Express, attending doctors placed at least six victims on life support. Furthermore, medical teams performed emergency surgeries to treat complex bone fractures and internal bleeding. Consequently, the district collector instructed all government doctors to remain on duty to ensure prompt medical treatment.
Police Launch Manhunt as Truck Driver Flees Scene
The driver of the vehicle abandoned the crashed truck and fled the scene on foot under the cover of darkness. Gwalior police teams seized the vehicle and collected forensic tyre marks from the road.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the truck operated with excessive agricultural cargo down a narrow slope. Detailed coverage by The New Indian Express confirmed that police registered a criminal negligence and manslaughter case. Special investigative squads launched raids across adjoining transport depots to arrest the absconding driver. In addition, district magistrates ordered strict barricading and speed breakers on all temple access roads. As a result, authorities sought to prevent speeding heavy vehicles near pedestrian pilgrim routes.
