The controversy originates from an interaction at a youth conference in Pune over the weekend. Addressing students, Rahul Gandhi criticized patriarchal attitudes and argued against treating women as dependents.
He stated that women belong to themselves and must enjoy complete autonomy over their lives. Gandhi asserted that the country’s seventy crore women represent its greatest economic and social strength.
He urged young citizens to reject obsolete social mindsets that restrict female participation in education, leadership, and public spaces.

In response to the Chief Minister’s remarks, Congress representatives defended Rahul Gandhi’s speech as a necessary discussion on gender equality.
