Delhi Police formally requested the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday to extend the deployment of central paramilitary forces. Police leadership asked the ministry to retain 273 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) across the capital until October 20. The original deployment order had expired on October 12 following weekend demonstrations.
Security chiefs emphasized that retaining over 25,000 paramilitary personnel remains critical to maintain public order. According to official correspondence reported by The Indian Express, authorities cited intelligence warnings regarding prolonged agitation plans. The communication highlighted recent public declarations by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) organizers. Therefore, police planners urged the central government to maintain heavy troop availability across sensitive municipal districts.
Intelligence Reports Flag Potential Marches to Sensitive Installations
Special Branch intelligence dossiers warned that protest groups are preparing fresh surprise demonstrations. Intelligence analysts warned that youth activists might attempt flash gatherings outside vital government installations.
Targeted sites include the Election Commission headquarters at Nirvachan Sadan, Parliament House, and India Gate. Furthermore, field reports published by The Hindu noted potential march attempts toward the private residences of Union ministers. CJP spokespersons had already breached barricades at Jantar Mantar earlier in the morning. Consequently, senior police commanders argued that sudden crowd mobilizations could cause severe security emergencies without rapid-action paramilitary reserves.
Multi-Party Mobilization Strains City Security Grid
The police communication also pointed to widening coordination among diverse political groups. The report noted that student collectives, the Bhim Army, and regional opposition cadres plan to join the ongoing agitation.
This growing political coalition demands the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter roll deletions. Meanwhile, police noted that 28 sanctioned central companies have not yet arrived in Delhi. In addition, the force must guard transit interchanges, railway stations, and court complexes continuously. As a result, law enforcement agencies face severe manpower constraints without an extended federal troop commitment.
Festive Vigil Adds to Extended Law Enforcement Commitments
The operational request coincides with the onset of major autumn festivals across north India. Security agencies must secure crowded commercial markets, religious processions, and community fairs over the coming fortnight.
Police commanders stressed that law enforcement cannot compromise festive security while managing daily political agitations. On the other hand, civil liberties advocates criticized the prolonged presence of armed troops on civilian streets. Opposition leaders argued that democratic protests do not justify turning the capital into a permanent military garrison. Nevertheless, the Home Ministry is expected to approve the extension request to guarantee round-the-clock rapid response capabilities.
