Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari expressed his disappointment over unfair public criticism directed at his ministry. Speaking at an infrastructure event in Pune, Gadkari highlighted that social media users frequently hold him personally accountable whenever a road collapses or suffers damage. This happens even when the project falls entirely under state government jurisdiction.
His comments follow recent internet backlash over monsoon damage and disruptions near the ‘Missing Link’ project on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway.
Misplaced Criticism on Social Media and Jurisdiction Limits
Addressing public perceptions surrounding major infrastructure projects, Gadkari pointed out the confusion between state and central road networks.
He noted that whenever a highway, bridge, or bypass road experiences structural issues, troll accounts and netizens immediately blame the central transport ministry.
He clarified that several major expressways and bypass networks are built, maintained, and operated directly by state agencies—such as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). These are not under the control of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
He emphasized that despite having no administrative control over state-led projects, he bears the brunt of online outrage.
Focus on Engineering Standards and Massive Regional Expansion
Beyond addressing online trolling, Gadkari reaffirmed his commitment to transforming regional connectivity across Maharashtra through high-speed corridors.
He outlined ongoing projects worth ₹60,000 crore. These projects are designed to tackle severe traffic congestion and pollution around Pune, Mumbai, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
However, the minister reiterated that civil engineers and project consultants must maintain strict quality control standards to avoid design flaws.
He emphasized that accurate Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and robust slope stabilization are crucial. This helps ensure highways withstand extreme monsoon conditions without failing.
