The Rajasthan government launched an individual voter outreach campaign aimed directly at Gen Z citizens. As young residents turn 18, they receive a personalized, hard-copy greeting letter signed by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma delivering a warm congratulatory message alongside a direct call to register on the electoral roll.
The Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) currently dispatches nearly 4,500 such letters daily from Jaipur. State officials confirmed that the government has already delivered over 80,000 birthday greetings across Rajasthan since initiating the project.
CM Urges Youth to Fulfill Civic Duties
Printed on official chief ministerial letterhead, each greeting carries the national emblem alongside photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sharma.
The personalized document includes the recipient’s full name, father’s name, residential address, and contact numbers.
“My heartiest congratulations to you on completing 18 springs of life,” Chief Minister Sharma writes in the letter. “Your youth, brimming with new energy, marks a new chapter of social responsibility, rights, and opportunities.”
Furthermore, the Chief Minister quotes Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing that a strong youth forms the bedrock of a prosperous nation.
He urges young citizens to enroll in the voter list immediately, framing active civic participation as essential to strengthening Indian democracy.
Strategic Shift to Reconnect With Gen Z Voters
The novel mail campaign comes at a crucial political juncture for the state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Recently, young voters across the country expressed growing frustration over recruitment delays, paper leaks, exam irregularities, and demands for educational reform.
Instead of relying on automated text messages or social media posts, state planners intentionally chose traditional posted mail. Party leaders believe receiving a tangible, physical document from the Chief Minister creates a personal connection that leaves a lasting impression on first-time voters.
Consequently, the initiative aims to build long-term goodwill ahead of future electoral battles.
Opposition Questions Legal Basis and Data Privacy
However, the initiative sparked immediate political pushback from the Opposition. Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tikaram Jully accused the BJP government of misusing personal citizen data for partisan political gain.
Jully argued that accessing and utilizing young citizens’ birth dates without prior consent represents a clear invasion of privacy.
Additionally, he alleged that recent youth demonstrations pressured the government into launching desperate charm offensives. Jully demanded that state officials explain the legal authority behind harvesting private demographic data for mass political mailers.
