Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi strongly backed the ongoing student resistance at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. He termed the jailing of youth organizers for waving the national flag an act of pure political cowardice. The Congress leader directly defended Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) functionaries Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
Delhi authorities had sent the two youth leaders to prison following their detention at the historic observatory complex. Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi declared that holding the national flag in peaceful protest remains a fundamental right. According to political reporting by The Indian Express, Gandhi united the student resistance with the INDIA bloc’s national campaign. Therefore, he affirmed that democratic movements across different banners share one common fight for civil liberties.
CJP Activists Sent to Tihar Jail for Five Days
The controversy erupted after Delhi Police arrested Das and Ranka inside Jantar Mantar on Tuesday morning. The pair had slipped past barricades into the locked complex while carrying the tricolor. They chanted slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter list deletions.
Police booked the activists for violating peace bond conditions and entering a denotified protest area. A Special Executive Magistrate quickly remanded both leaders to five days in judicial custody at Tihar Jail. Furthermore, coverage by Rediff News noted that the magistrate acted upon preventive police applications. Consequently, civil rights advocates condemned the rapid imprisonment of peaceful demonstrators as administrative intimidation.
Legal Defense Challenges Magistrate’s Remand Decision
The legal team representing the CJP questioned the magistrate’s statutory authority to issue prison remands. Defense advocate Abhisht Hela argued that police misled the court regarding alleged breach-of-peace threats. He emphasized that the activists had gathered peacefully without issuing mass mobilization calls.
Lawyers asserted that police fabricated charges to stifle lawful criticism of the Election Commission. As highlighted by Hindustan Times, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke challenged the government to declare an official emergency instead of jailing youths secretly. Meanwhile, senior jurists prepared emergency appeals before the Delhi High Court. As a result, the legal fight against arbitrary detention rules expanded across multiple judicial forums.
Opposition Vows to Reclaim Jantar Mantar Across India
Rahul Gandhi delivered a defiant message regarding the capital’s denotified protest hub. He proclaimed that Jantar Mantar belongs to the citizens of India rather than administrative censors. The Congress leader pledged that democratic forces will reclaim the venue through mass peaceful participation.
Moreover, opposition parties warned that banning central assembly points will spark copycat protests across state capitals. On the other hand, ruling party spokespersons defended the police action, arguing that no group can violate prohibitory orders. Nevertheless, Gandhi affirmed that the broader struggle against voting irregularities will intensify outside Parliament and in the courts. The widening standoff indicates that the youth movement will continue challenging official protest bans nationwide.
