An Israeli passenger has shared how an unexpected hobby helped him avert a catastrophic aviation disaster aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073. Yaniv Hayun, a plumber by profession, took the flight controls midair after a rogue co-pilot stabbed the Indian captain and forced the Boeing 737 into a steep nosedive.
Hayun had never flown an airplane in his life. However, he regularly watched aviation documentaries, which gave him the presence of mind to pull back the control yoke during the plunge, according to an interview reported by The Indian Express.
Storming the Cockpit During a 14,000-Foot Dive
The crisis unfolded when the rogue co-pilot attacked Captain Smit Machchhar with a sharp knife and jammed the flight controls forward. As a result, the aircraft plummeted more than 14,000 feet in just 29 seconds.
Despite suffering severe stab wounds, Captain Machchhar fought back and managed to unlock the armored flight deck door. Hearing screams from inside, Hayun and fellow passengers charged into the cockpit.
They tackled the attacker to the floor and dragged him into the galley. Furthermore, passengers used headphone cords and zip ties to bind the co-pilot’s hands, while a traveling dentist provided first aid to the bleeding captain.
Lessons from ‘Air Crash Investigation’ Save the Day
With Captain Machchhar incapacitated and the aircraft still pointing downward, Hayun noticed that the flight deck remained unmanned. Remembering episodes of the documentary series Air Crash Investigation, he knew he had to act instantly.
Hayun grabbed the control yoke and pulled back firmly to level the plane’s wings. The dive had placed immense aerodynamic stress on the airframe, ripping away portions of the rear rudder.
However, his decisive action arrested the plunge and restored level flight. Consequently, he stabilized the aircraft long enough for two off-duty commercial pilots on board to take over the flight deck, as detailed in an analytical report by The Indian Express.
Off-Duty Crew Executes Safe Landing in Saudi Arabia
Once in the cockpit seats, the relief pilots coordinated with regional air traffic controllers. They declared an emergency and navigated the damaged jet to Tabuk Airport in northern Saudi Arabia.
Emergency medical teams met the aircraft on the runway and rushed Captain Machchhar to a local hospital for surgery. Meanwhile, Saudi security personnel took the attacker into custody.
Passengers later boarded a replacement flight to Tel Aviv, praising the teamwork between Captain Machchhar and brave flyers that prevented a mass tragedy.
National Acclaim for Everyday Heroism
Back home in Israel, political leaders and citizens hailed Hayun for his extraordinary courage under fire.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly commended the plumber’s bravery, remarking that he showed the heart of a lion during the midair crisis. Furthermore, aviation experts noted that while passenger interventions remain extremely rare, Hayun’s quick thinking proved vital in preventing the aircraft from exceeding structural limits.
Ultimately, Hayun’s quick reaction and Captain Machchhar’s resilience combined to turn a certain catastrophe into an inspiring story of survival.
