Senior IAS officer and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has issued formal notices to Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff, demanding an explanation within 15 days for their involvement in promoting Vimal pan masala brands. The regulatory move targets surrogate advertising and the promotion of tobacco-linked health hazards by high-profile public figures, sparking significant chatter across public health and entertainment circles.
Action Against Surrogate Advertising and Health Risks
The directives issued by the Maharashtra FDA chief emphasize that pan masala products contain ingredients such as betel nut and magnesium carbonate, which pose documented health risks to consumers.
The regulatory authority pointed out that endorsing these brands, directly or through surrogate advertising for related mouth freshener products, misleads the public and undermines public health regulations aimed at curbing tobacco consumption.
Officers served the notices directly to the actors’ official representatives, directing them to clarify their stance and contractual obligations regarding the brand campaigns.
Strict 15-Day Timeline and Potential Legal Consequences
The official notice gives the actors a strict 15-day deadline to submit a written explanation detailing why action should not be initiated against them under relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and guidelines governing celebrity endorsements.
FDA officials warned that failure to provide a satisfactory response within the stipulated timeframe could result in further administrative proceedings, including formal warnings, financial penalties, or legal action against the promotional campaigns.
The enforcement drive forms part of a broader crackdown led by Mundhe to eliminate surrogate commercial promotions of tobacco and pan masala products across print, television, and digital media platforms.
