In an unprecedented security measure, Indian Railways has cancelled all train services arriving at and departing from the national capital’s two busiest rail hubs on Saturday, October 10. The ten-hour shutdown will run from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM across New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM).

The mass cancellation covers dozens of premium long-distance services, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat Express trains. Furthermore, railway authorities took the proactive decision following severe traffic and security alerts ahead of a massive opposition demonstration, according to a railway report by The Indian Express.

Massive Protests Trigger Complete Rail Clampdown

The disruption stems from a major mobilization called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) alongside opposition youth organizations. Protesters plan to march across central Delhi on Saturday to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over voter list revisions.

Intelligence reports warned of severe gridlock along arterial roads connecting central Delhi to major railway terminals. On Thursday, security barricades and traffic diversions caused nearly 5,000 passengers to miss their scheduled trains.

Therefore, railway authorities suspended incoming long-distance services at source stations to prevent travelers from being trapped in traffic jams around the capital, as detailed by The Hindu.

Dozens of Premium Trains Cancelled at Source

The Ministry of Railways issued orders canceling all Mail and Express trains originating after 2:00 PM on Friday that were scheduled to reach New Delhi or Nizamuddin during Saturday morning hours.

The cancellations affect prominent high-speed corridors linking Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru to the capital. In addition, several originating outbound departures from Delhi stand cancelled until Saturday afternoon.

However, suburban local trains and services operating through peripheral stations like Anand Vihar Terminal, Delhi Sarai Rohilla, and Old Delhi will operate under modified schedules, according to reporting by The Indian Express.

Automatic Full Refunds for Affected Passengers

The sudden halt will disrupt travel plans for tens of thousands of weekend passengers and festive travelers. To cushion the impact, Indian Railways initiated automatic full refunds for all affected ticket holders.

Passengers who booked online through the IRCTC portal do not need to file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR). The ticketing system will process complete refunds directly back to source bank accounts.

Meanwhile, passengers holding counter tickets can claim full refunds from reservation windows within three days of scheduled departures, according to live updates from The Times of India.

Heavy Security Grid Across the National Capital

Delhi Police and central paramilitary forces have turned central Delhi into a fortified zone ahead of Saturday’s march. Security personnel have placed shipping containers and anti-riot barricades around the Election Commission headquarters.

City authorities urged travelers heading to Indira Gandhi International Airport to use the Delhi Metro Airport Express Line to avoid road blockades.

Ultimately, this massive rail suspension illustrates how deep political confrontations over democratic oversight are causing widespread disruption to daily transport infrastructure across the country.
