Tech giant Apple has officially launched its flagship contactless payment service, Apple Pay, in India. The rollout comes 12 years after the service first debuted in the United States in 2014.

The service allows iPhone and Apple Watch owners to make secure, tap-and-pay transactions at physical retail counters and online platforms. Furthermore, users can complete purchases without entering one-time passwords (OTPs) or physical card PINs, according to an explanatory report by The Indian Express.

Exclusive Launch Partnership with Axis Bank

At launch, Apple has partnered exclusively with Axis Bank to enable the service across the country. Therefore, only Axis Bank credit cardholders on Visa and Mastercard networks can activate Apple Pay right now.

Cardholders who bank with other lenders must wait for subsequent rollout phases. In addition, debit cards and RuPay network cards remain unsupported during this initial phase.

However, Apple plans to integrate more major Indian private and public sector banks over the coming months, as detailed by Gadgets360.

How Apple Pay Works for Everyday Payments

The payment service operates through Near Field Communication (NFC) technology built into Apple hardware. To pay at a store, users simply double-click the side button on their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Next, the user authenticates the transaction using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode. Finally, holding the device near any contactless payment terminal completes the transaction within seconds.

Meanwhile, popular online apps such as Zomato, Blinkit, and Tata 1mg now support instant in-app checkout buttons. Consequently, shoppers avoid entering CVV numbers or waiting for SMS verification codes during online checkout.

Device Compatibility and Setup Steps

Setting up Apple Pay takes only a couple of minutes through the native Apple Wallet app. Users must have a compatible device running iOS 18 or later, starting from the iPhone XR up to the latest flagship models.

To add an eligible card, users simply:

  • Open the Wallet application on an iPhone.
  • Tap the Add (+) button in the top right corner.
  • Select Debit or Credit Cards and scan the Axis Bank credit card.
  • Complete a one-time bank SMS verification to activate the card.

Once verified, the card links automatically to the paired Apple Watch as well, making daily payments effortless.

Built-In Privacy and Tokenization Security

Security remains the central foundation of Apple Pay’s payment architecture. The platform does not store actual credit card numbers on the device or Apple servers.

Instead, the system assigns a unique, encrypted Device Account Number to each card. During transactions, Apple shares only this single-use security token with the merchant.

As a result, your real financial details remain hidden from retail cashiers and online databases. Ultimately, the arrival of Apple Pay provides Indian consumers with an ultra-secure alternative for contactless card spending.
