Israeli security and intelligence agencies have opened an urgent investigation into an alleged terror motive behind a violent midair cockpit stabbing. The incident occurred Wednesday aboard a flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was carrying roughly 180 passengers, mostly Israeli nationals, when a violent fight broke out between the two operating pilots. Furthermore, the altercation forced the Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet into an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in northern Saudi Arabia, according to a detailed report by India Today.

Violent Cockpit Struggle Sparks Midair Plunge

The aircraft was cruising over Saudi airspace when the cockpit turned into a combat zone. Flight tracking logs revealed that the plane suddenly plunged over 17,000 feet within just two minutes.

Security reports indicate that the co-pilot, an Omani citizen, allegedly attempted to force the aircraft into a fatal dive. However, the captain fought back desperately to regain manual control of the controls.

During the fierce struggle, the co-pilot repeatedly stabbed the captain with a sharp weapon. Hearing shouts and distress calls, cabin crew and courageous passengers rushed the cockpit, helping the wounded captain overpower and tie up the attacker.

Consequently, the pilots triggered transponder distress code 7700, setting off emergency hijacking alarms across regional air defenses, as reported by The Indian Express.

Off-Duty Pilots Execute Safe Saudi Landing

The aircraft narrowly avoided disaster thanks to two off-duty commercial pilots who happened to be traveling as passengers.

The relief pilots took the controls and stabilized the damaged jetliner. In addition, air traffic controllers routed the flight to Tabuk’s Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Airport for an immediate landing.

Paramedics met the aircraft on the runway and rushed both operating pilots to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Fortunately, none of the 180 passengers suffered life-threatening injuries during the rapid descent and subsequent landing.

Israeli security officials confirmed that outside hijackers were not involved in the incident. Nevertheless, Israel’s intelligence agencies, including the Mossad and Shin Bet, are investigating whether extremist ideology motivated the co-pilot’s actions.

Investigators are examining the co-pilot’s digital communications, travel history, and possible recruitment by militant networks. Meanwhile, flydubai has temporarily suspended its scheduled flights to Tel Aviv while safety audits continue, as noted by Israel Hayom.

Israeli and Saudi aviation authorities coordinated rapidly behind the scenes to dispatch a relief flight to transport the stranded passengers safely home to Tel Aviv.

Global Scrutiny Over Flight Deck Security

This unprecedented incident has raised alarming questions regarding international cockpit screening and pilot vetting.

Modern civil aviation rules have heavily fortified cockpit doors against passenger cabin threats since 2001. However, this crisis exposes the grave risks that arise when insider threats occur inside the cockpit itself.

Therefore, international aviation regulators are likely to review psychological evaluations, crew pairing procedures, and onboard security protocols across international carriers worldwide.
