Former Tehelka founder and editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has approached the Supreme Court of India to challenge his conviction and 10-year prison sentence in a 2013 sexual assault and rape case. The petition comes two weeks after the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court set aside his earlier trial court acquittal. Importantly, the High Court found the senior journalist guilty of sexually assaulting a former junior colleague inside a luxury hotel elevator in Goa.
High Court Overturned 2021 Trial Court Acquittal
The legal battle stems from an incident during an official festival organized by Tehelka at a resort in Bambolim, Goa, in November 2013.
A Goa sessions court initially acquitted Tejpal of all charges in May 2021, citing alleged inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. However, the State of Goa challenged the acquittal before the Bombay High Court.
On August 6, 2026, the High Court reversed the acquittal and held that the survivor’s testimony was consistent and credible. Furthermore, the court sentenced Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. These sections included rape by a person in a position of authority.
Goa Government Demands Life Imprisonment in Parallel Plea
Tejpal’s appeal in the apex court follows a separate petition filed earlier this week by the Goa government seeking an enhanced sentence. The state administration approached the Supreme Court on August 18. They argued that a 10-year term is manifestly inadequate given the abuse of authority and professional trust.
State prosecutors have requested the top court to increase Tejpal’s punishment to life imprisonment.
Decade-Long Legal Battle Reaches Apex Court
With cross-appeals now before the Supreme Court, the high-profile case enters its final legal chapter after more than a decade of courtroom trials. In his plea, Tejpal has sought an interim stay on the High Court verdict. He has also requested relief against the 10-year jail sentence, while maintaining his defense of innocence.
The Supreme Court is expected to take up both Tejpal’s appeal and the Goa government’s enhancement petition in upcoming hearings.
