A major political controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu following an editorial published by Murasoli, the official mouthpiece of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The newspaper launched a personal attack against Chief Minister C. The editorial severely criticized the Chief Minister after visuals from the August 15 event showed Trisha seated in the VIP enclosure. She was sitting alongside Vijay’s parents, S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shoba Chandrasekhar. Furthermore, the article specifically highlighted an exchange of salutes between Vijay and Trisha. This occurred as the Chief Minister inspected the parade in an open jeep.
“The dignity of Chief Minister Vijay, who hoisted the flag on Independence Day, flew in the air. Even people who voted for him could not stomach the sight of him; without any shame or embarrassment, making an actor sit in the front row and both saluting each other. It’s such a person, who thinks he can justify such vulgarity and disgust by doing it openly and blatantly, has today come as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” the Murasoli editorial stated.
While the editorial refrained from directly naming Trisha—referring to her only as “an actor”—it argued that even supporters of Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), found the official optics difficult to accept.
Deepening Rift Between DMK and TVK
The attack marks a sharp escalation in the rivalry between the opposition DMK and the ruling TVK. Beyond targeting the seating arrangement, Murasoli accused Vijay of using official state functions to project personal image. They argued he did this rather than addressing administrative issues.
The editorial further claimed that Vijay’s Independence Day address betrayed political anxiety regarding his governance record three months into his term. It argued that the ceremony was converted into a fan-club gathering rather than a solemn state occasion.
Protocol Row and Opposition Backlash
The controversy has also drawn reactions regarding administrative protocol and official guest lists at high-profile state events. DMK cadres and political commentators questioned how a private individual without an official government post was assigned front-row seating. This was ahead of senior bureaucrats, freedom fighters, and elected representatives.
