West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a fresh probe into the 2024 rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Sunday. He spoke at a memorial event in Panihati on the second anniversary of the tragic incident. During the event, the Chief Minister confirmed that the state government decided to launch a new inquiry. This followed a formal request from the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath. She is now a BJP MLA.
The investigation will be conducted under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952 (also referenced as the Special Commission Act, 1952). This follows extensive administrative consultations.
Adhikari stated that the state government took the step after detailed discussions with the Chief Secretary and legal experts. This was done to ensure comprehensive accountability and address unanswered questions.
Allegations of Police Failure and Separate Inquiry Into Cremation Lapses
During his address, Chief Minister Adhikari sharply criticized the initial police handling of the 2024 case. He claimed that law enforcement officers failed to perform their fundamental duties during the early stages of the investigation.
He alleged that critical procedural lapses occurred, including improper preservation of evidence and procedural failures surrounding the victim’s last rites.
In addition to the primary commission inquiry, Adhikari ordered a separate police investigation. This will look into alleged procedural irregularities during the victim’s cremation.
He directed the Commissioner of Police, Barrackpore, to register an FIR and examine how the cremation took place. The investigation will focus on whether mandatory family consent protocols and financial documentation were followed.
He named several local political figures allegedly involved in facilitating the rushed cremation. In addition, he promised strict action against all responsible parties.
State Observes Silence as Doctors and Citizens Renew Demand for Full Justice
Marking two years since the horrific August 9, 2024 crime that triggered nationwide outrage, government and private hospitals across West Bengal observed two minutes of silence at 11:00 AM. This was in memory of the deceased doctor.
Medical associations and student bodies, including the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, held healthcare camps for underprivileged communities. They also organized memorial marches across Kolkata, reiterating their demand for the conviction of all co-conspirators.
Chief Minister Adhikari stressed that while central investigating agencies continue examining federal aspects of the case, state authorities will independently pursue all matters falling under state jurisdiction.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to women’s safety, Adhikari assured citizens that the government will maintain zero tolerance toward severe crimes against women. Moreover, he pledged to fight until complete justice is served for the victim and her family.
