At least 15 Indian tourists lost their lives after a tourist speedboat capsized off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island on Saturday, turning what was meant to be a company-sponsored holiday into a devastating tragedy. The accident occurred while the group was returning from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi Port. According to Vietnamese authorities, 21 people were rescued, and search-and-rescue operations continued for several hours after the incident.
What Happened?
The speedboat was carrying 36 people, including 32 Indian tourists, three crew members and one attendant. Officials said the vessel overturned roughly 400 metres from the shore after encountering rough sea conditions, with high waves and strong winds believed to have contributed to the accident.
Local rescue teams, fishermen and emergency responders rushed to the scene and managed to pull several passengers from the water. However, 15 Indian tourists were confirmed dead despite the rescue efforts.
Victims Linked to Lava Mobiles
Many of those who died were employees and distributors associated with Lava Mobiles. The group had travelled to Vietnam as part of the company’s annual incentive trip. Several victims were reported to be from Andhra Pradesh, while others belonged to Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam later released the names of the deceased and said it was working closely with Vietnamese authorities to assist survivors and the families of those affected.
Rescue and Official Response
The Embassy of India in Vietnam activated emergency response teams in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City soon after the accident. Officials have been coordinating with local authorities to facilitate medical assistance, identification of victims and support for family members.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives and said Indian diplomatic officials were in constant touch with the Vietnamese government to ensure all necessary assistance was provided.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered an investigation into the incident and directed authorities to review safety procedures for tourist boats operating in the region.
Phu Quoc: A Popular Tourist Destination
Phu Quoc, located in southern Vietnam, has become one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing tourist destinations. The island attracts thousands of Indian visitors every year thanks to direct flights, visa-friendly policies and its beaches, island tours and water sports.
The tragedy has raised fresh concerns over maritime safety for tourist excursions, particularly during periods of unpredictable weather.
Investigation Underway
Authorities in Vietnam are examining whether weather conditions alone caused the accident or if other factors played a role. Investigators are expected to review the vessel’s safety compliance, crew procedures and operational decisions before releasing a final report.
As rescue operations concluded and families awaited official communication, the incident marked one of the deadliest overseas accidents involving Indian tourists in recent years.
