India’s Sri Lanka tour has taken its first big hit before a ball has even been bowled. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the two-Test series after failing to recover fully from a left knee injury. The BCCI has moved quickly to name his replacement.
The Men’s Selection Committee has called up Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi in his place. “Bumrah is not fit and Auqib Nabi has been approved as his replacement,” a BCCI source told PTI.
How the Injury Happened
Bumrah’s fitness had already been in question for weeks. He picked up an impact injury while fielding during the second ODI against England in Cardiff on July 16. He was subsequently ruled out of the final ODI at Lord’s as a precaution.
After the England series wrapped up, Bumrah received an injection in his knee as part of a long-term fitness plan drawn up by the BCCI medical team. However, he had been named in India’s provisional squad for the Sri Lanka Tests. This was only subject to clearing a final fitness assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Why the BCCI Decided Not to Risk Him
Bumrah travelled to the Centre of Excellence this week for that assessment. However, the swelling in his knee turned out to be more serious than initially expected. According to a BCCI source, the medical staff running the CoE, Dhananjay and Thulasi, made the call that he couldn’t be risked.
That decision came as something of a reversal. “It must be said that initially both team management and selection committee were made to believe that Bumrah could be available for at least one of the two Tests,” the source said. The CoE’s shifting assessment left people involved with the squad baffled.
Given Bumrah’s long history of injuries, and a packed international calendar still ahead, the BCCI appears to have decided against pushing him back into red-ball cricket. They want to wait until he’s fully ready.
Who Replaces Him
Auqib Nabi’s call-up marks his first senior national selection. He becomes only the third player from Jammu and Kashmir to earn a senior India call-up. Parvez Rasool and Umran Malik were both picked for white-ball cricket rather than Tests.
Nabi has picked up more than 100 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons. He was the chief architect of Jammu and Kashmir’s red-ball success in that period. He’s also considered a handy contributor with the bat, so he gives India’s Test side some added depth in his role.
What This Means for India’s Attack
Bumrah’s absence leaves a significant gap. As the world’s No. 1-ranked Test bowler, he has been India’s most reliable wicket-taker across conditions. He is valued for his ability to generate movement with the new ball, sustain long spells, and produce breakthroughs when the team needs them most.
His withdrawal puts more pressure on India’s remaining pace bowlers just as the side looks to find consistency in the longest format. India’s team has struggled through defeats in home Test series over the past two years. They have also had mixed results overseas.
With the series set to begin August 15 in Galle, India’s attack will now be built around Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and the uncapped Nabi. This is a considerably different look than the one built around Bumrah as spearhead.
How well that unit adapts under Shubman Gill’s captaincy will be worth watching. Also, whether Bumrah’s recovery stays on track for India’s busier assignments later in the WTC cycle will be the second key thread once the series gets underway.
