Google set a final date for Google Assistant. The company will remove the voice assistant from mobile devices on September 4. Gemini AI will replace it across the Android ecosystem.

Google sent emails to notify Android users this week. The company confirmed that Assistant is ending on smartphones and tablets. It will also stop working on Wear OS smartwatches, paired headphones, and Android Auto. The update will roll out over a few weeks.

No Option to Switch Back

Users could previously switch back to Google Assistant in settings. That option will disappear once the rollout reaches a device. Gemini will become the permanent default assistant.

Google explained the move in its official notice. The company stated that Gemini is now the primary assistant experience for Android users.

Which Devices Are Affected

The change affects most mobile hardware and wearables:

  • Impacted Devices: Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, supported headphones, and phone-based Android Auto.
  • Temporary Exceptions: Cars with Google built-in will keep Google Assistant for now. Smart home devices like Google Home speakers, Nest displays, and Google TV will also retain Assistant temporarily.
  • Older Hardware: Phones running Android 9 or lower with less than 2GB of RAM will keep a basic version of Assistant.

A Major Platform Shift

This change marks a major update for Android. Gemini brings advanced AI features and complex reasoning. However, it replaces simple voice commands with a full AI model.

Gemini now has over 950 million active monthly users. Google is now moving all mobile interactions to its single AI platform.
