Tensions in the Middle East remain high. The conflict between the US and Iran continues to escalate. The flare-up has hit the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. It has renewed worldwide concerns over regional security.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it struck two military bases in Kuwait on Monday. The attacks targeted Ali Al-Salem Air Base and Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base. IRGC claimed it destroyed fuel tanks and Patriot air defense systems at Ali Al-Salem. It also said it destroyed an FPS radar system at Ahmed Al-Jaber.
The strikes were part of the third phase of Iran’s “eye-for-an-eye” operation. This operation began in response to US military action against Iran. IRGC said the operation is still ongoing. It also warned the US against further involvement in the Strait of Hormuz.
Phases of the Operation
The first phase targeted Jordan’s Prince Hassan Airbase. IRGC said it set fire to several fuel depots and ammunition storage sites there. The second phase hit Bahrain’s Sheikh Isa Airbase.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed a new wave of strikes on Iran. It said dozens of targets across multiple locations were hit. The goal was to limit Iran’s ability to disrupt global maritime trade.
CENTCOM said it struck Iran’s air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats. It stated that the Strait of Hormuz is vital for global trade. It added that Iran does not control the strait.
Background of US-Iran Tensions
On February 28, the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Tehran and other Iranian cities. The strikes killed Iran’s then Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Iran responded with drone and missile attacks on US and Israeli interests in the region.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz also rose as Iran tightened control over the route. Several rounds of peace talks have taken place since. However, an end to the hostilities has not yet been reached.
