The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) launched a sharp attack against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s administration on Tuesday. The opposition party challenged the state government’s claims of reduced market borrowing. Senior DMK leader and former state finance minister Thangam Thennarasu accused the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of creating a fiscal illusion.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Thennarasu directly questioned the government’s accounting methods. He asked whether unpaid contractor bills suddenly count as state budget savings. According to political reporting published by ThePrint, Thennarasu stated that the government withheld treasury clearances to show lower debt numbers. Therefore, the opposition accused the administration of misleading citizens regarding actual public liabilities.

Withheld Treasury Clearances Disguise Fiscal Deficit

The dispute erupted after the TVK government highlighted a sharp decline in open-market borrowings during the first half of the fiscal year. The ruling party had framed the figures as proof of superior financial discipline compared to the previous DMK rule.

However, Thennarasu dismissed the claim as statistical manipulation. He alleged that the finance department halted regular payments across public works, rural development, and municipal water projects. As detailed by Ground News, the former minister noted that postponing legitimate expenses does not equate to genuine revenue growth. Furthermore, he argued that moving liabilities into future quarters merely hides structural deficits. Consequently, the opposition demanded a transparent monthly white paper detailing all pending departmental bills.

Infrastructure Contractors and Suppliers Face Cash Crunch

The DMK highlighted severe liquidity distress among local vendors and infrastructure builders across the state. Construction contractors working on rural highways and civic bridges reported mounting payment delays at district treasuries.

Many small engineering firms face mounting bank interest charges on working capital loans. Meanwhile, suppliers providing construction raw materials to public departments have halted fresh deliveries. In addition, rural development projects in tier-two towns face slowing execution schedules. As a result, trade associations warned that prolonged payment freezes threaten state economic momentum.

Political Battle Intensifies Over Tamil Nadu’s Public Debt

The sharp exchange marks a fresh chapter in the fierce rivalry between the DMK and the newly elected TVK government. Earlier this year, Chief Minister Vijay released a comprehensive white paper on state finances. As reported by The Hindu, the white paper placed Tamil Nadu’s inherited direct debt at over Rs 13 lakh crore, blaming previous DMK policies.

On the other hand, the DMK insists that capital borrowing supported essential welfare schemes and industrial infrastructure. TVK spokespersons defended their current fiscal policy, maintaining that careful treasury management eliminated wasteful departmental spending. Nevertheless, the DMK vowed to raise treasury payment delays during the upcoming winter legislative session. The debt debate confirms that state finances will remain a key political battleground in Tamil Nadu politics.
