The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Saturday made an urgent appeal to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant following the detention of dozens of young lawyers in central Delhi. Delhi Police rounded up approximately 45 advocates near the Supreme Court premises and surrounding roads. The detentions occurred during a massive citywide security clampdown linked to protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police stopped and detained legal practitioners who gathered near Tilak Marg and Mathura Road. Most of the detainees were junior advocates attempting to register peaceful opposition against alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions. According to detailed reporting by The Indian Express, the Bar body expressed acute distress over police taking practicing advocates into preventive custody simply for exercising their constitutional right to assembly.

SCBA Appeals to Chief Justice for Immediate Safeguards

Disturbed by reports of the detentions, the SCBA executive committee formally resolved to seek the immediate intervention of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The association urged the CJI to take up the matter directly with police authorities to ascertain the whereabouts of the detained lawyers and guarantee their safety.

Bar leaders emphasized that lawyers play a vital role as officers of the court and guardians of constitutional liberties. Furthermore, detaining advocates outside judicial premises sets a damaging precedent. In its representation, the SCBA noted that authorities denied several junior advocates basic communication with their families and colleagues. Therefore, immediate institutional intervention became imperative to prevent procedural abuses and protect the dignity of the legal fraternity.

Senior Jurists Rally Behind Junior Bar

The police action also sparked widespread indignation among senior legal luminaries, including Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Singhvi, and Prashant Bhushan. Senior counsels questioned the proportionality of invoking prohibitory orders against members of the legal profession.

Meanwhile, SCBA President and Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai initiated direct talks with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to ensure the safety and prompt discharge of all detained advocates. As reported by The Hindu, the bar leadership firmly communicated that arbitrary detention of advocates near the highest court of the land undermined the administration of justice. In addition, bar representatives visited local police stations to provide immediate legal representation to the detained juniors.

Judicial Step Prompts Release of Detained Lawyers

The swift intervention by Chief Justice Surya Kant yielded immediate results on Saturday afternoon. Following communications between the judiciary and top law enforcement officials, police authorities initiated the release process for the detained advocates.

Officers subsequently dropped the detained lawyers back near the Supreme Court complex after completing basic identity verifications. As highlighted by The Times of India, the timely judicial intervention prevented prolonged unlawful custody. Consequently, the SCBA welcomed the release but reiterated that security agencies must respect advocates’ constitutional freedoms during public demonstrations.
