SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have revealed new gameplay from Stranger Than Heaven, giving players a closer look at the upcoming action-adventure game’s entertainment and music systems.
The new footage, released after Tokyo Game Show 2026, focuses on the game’s Show Business element. Players will follow protagonist Makoto Daito as he finds musical inspiration, creates songs and promotes live performances during his journey.
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass.
New Show Business Gameplay
The latest Stranger Than Heaven gameplay reveal highlights an unusual part of the game’s design.
Rather than focusing only on combat and exploration, the Show Business system allows Makoto to become involved in the entertainment world.
Players can look for musical inspiration, create songs and work on promoting performances.
The system adds another layer to a game that combines action, exploration and a long-running historical storyline.
SEGA describes Stranger Than Heaven as an action-adventure title from RGG Studio, the team known for its character-driven storytelling and intense combat.
A Story Spanning Five Decades
One of the game’s defining features is its historical scope.
Stranger Than Heaven follows events across 50 years, taking players through different periods of Japanese history.
Recent footage has shown locations including Kokura, Fukuoka, Kure in Hiroshima and Minami in Osaka, with each setting reflecting its respective period.
The story centres on Makoto Daito, who becomes involved in a series of events that combine crime, personal relationships, violence and the entertainment industry.
The changing historical settings are also reflected in the game’s environments, characters and activities.
SEGA Expands the Cast
SEGA has also continued to reveal prominent names connected with the project.
The announced cast includes Japanese actors and performers alongside international entertainment figures.
SEGA previously confirmed appearances involving Snoop Dogg, Tori Kelly, Ado and Tupac Shakur, among others.
The inclusion of Tupac is particularly notable.
According to SEGA, RGG Studio worked with Amaru Entertainment and used archival photographs and footage as references for his character.
SEGA said the character was created through CG production rather than AI.
The game therefore combines fictional storytelling with appearances and references connected to real-world music culture.
Tokyo Game Show 2026 Showcase
Stranger Than Heaven was one of the major titles featured by SEGA and ATLUS at Tokyo Game Show 2026, which took place in September.
SEGA’s Tokyo Game Show lineup also included Persona 4 Revival, Total War: Warhammer 40,000, Crazy Taxi: World Tour and other upcoming titles.
The company’s presence at the event gave players an opportunity to see Stranger Than Heaven ahead of its 2027 release, while the latest online footage has provided a closer look at its gameplay systems.

What the New Footage Shows
The latest gameplay reveal provides a broader picture of what RGG Studio is attempting with Stranger Than Heaven.
The game combines traditional action-adventure elements with a historical narrative and entertainment-management mechanics.
Combat remains an important part of the experience, but the Show Business system gives players another way to interact with the game’s world.
Its five-decade timeline also allows the developers to explore major changes in locations, culture and entertainment across different historical periods.
With the January 2027 launch approaching, SEGA is expected to reveal more information about the game’s characters, story and gameplay systems.
For now, the latest footage confirms that Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up as one of SEGA’s major upcoming action-adventure releases, with its historical setting and entertainment-focused mechanics forming a central part of its identity.
