Congress has retained the Datia Assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh after winning a high-stakes by-election. Congress candidate Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh secured 66,757 votes. He defeated Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Ashutosh Tiwari by a margin of 6,016 votes. The bypoll was triggered after the disqualification of sitting Congress legislator Rajendra Bharti. He was convicted by a Delhi court in a bank fraud and cheating case.
The contest turned into a test of local influence and internal party unity. The BJP decided not to nominate former state Home Minister Narottam Mishra. He had represented the seat for three terms before losing to the Congress in the 2023 Assembly elections. Instead, the BJP fielded Ashutosh Tiwari, a first-time candidate.
The decision led to discontent among Mishra’s long-standing supporters and local organizational workers. Although Mishra eventually campaigned for the party, the transition created challenges on the ground. As a result, it even led to a defeat for the BJP in Mishra’s traditional polling booth.
Congress focused its strategy primarily on rural voters. The party addressed local agricultural concerns, fertilizer shortages, and regional employment. The campaign saw higher participation in rural regions. In those areas, voter turnout reached nearly 78%. In contrast, turnout was around 62% in urban centers.
Senior party leaders, including state party president Jitu Patwari, campaigned extensively across rural villages to mobilize support.
Internal friction also affected the Congress ahead of the count. The party suspended former MLA Rajendra Bharti just before vote counting. This followed allegations that he was working against the party’s official nominee.
Despite the internal division, Ghanshyam Singh maintained a lead through most of the 15 counting rounds to secure the win.
Following the final declaration, state Congress leaders called the result an indicator of shifting political sentiments in the state ahead of future elections. Meanwhile, state BJP leadership stated that the party will review the election outcome. In addition, they will evaluate organizational coordination in the constituency.
