The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a major overhaul in the national selection committee. In particular, current Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar is likely to be replaced when his extended tenure concludes in September.
Former Indian batting icon VVS Laxman currently heads the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. Additionally, legendary fast bowler Zaheer Khan has emerged as one of the frontrunners to succeed Agarkar in the high-profile position.
What Prompted the Potential Shake-Up
Ajit Agarkar took over as Chief Selector in July 2023. While his initial contract expired in June 2026, the board granted him a short three-month extension through September.
Reports indicate that lingering differences of opinion between the selection panel and senior BCCI officials over long-term planning led to the decision. As a result, Agarkar was not offered a further extension through the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The disagreement reportedly stemmed from differing views regarding the future of senior players. In particular, there were differences about white-ball captain Rohit Sharma, following the recent tour of England.
Frontrunners for the Top Post
The BCCI is evaluating top former players who are capable of navigating senior player management. At the same time, they must guide the transition toward upcoming ICC events.
Former India batter VVS Laxman leads the race due to his extensive administrative experience at the Centre of Excellence. Moreover, he has had multiple coaching stints with the national side.
Former pacer Zaheer Khan has also been heavily discussed as a strong candidate. At the same time, reports suggest the board is exploring a broader Director of Cricket structure to streamline selection and management workflows.
Decision Expected at Upcoming AGM
Despite the internal friction, Agarkar’s tenure remains one of the most successful in recent history. This period is highlighted by India’s victories in the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups, as well as the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
The BCCI office bearers are expected to hold a formal review meeting with Agarkar. This will occur following the conclusion of India’s upcoming Test series in Sri Lanka.
A final decision regarding the leadership of the national selection committee will be finalized during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM is scheduled for September.
