A major political controversy erupted after Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju shared a post on social media containing a curated list of prominent opposition figures, intellectuals, and activists labeled as ‘Dimagi Naxals’ (Intellectual Naxals). The post accused these individuals of attempting to destabilize national institutions. Furthermore, it said they spread anti-national rhetoric through public discourse.
Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram delivered a sharp response. He stated he felt proud to be included in a list alongside distinguished citizens who stand up for constitutional principles.
Rijiju Attacks Opposition and Intellectual Framework
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju amplified the post across digital platforms. He also argued that ideological extremism poses a silent threat to India’s national security and democratic fabric.
He claimed that ‘Dimagi Naxals’ operate through academic, legal, and media networks to undermine governance and derail developmental initiatives.
BJP leaders rallied behind Rijiju’s statements. They maintained that public awareness is essential to counter narrative-building campaigns orchestrated by left-leaning political groups and human rights organizations.
Chidambaram Rebuts ‘Dimagi Naxal’
Firing back at the ruling party, P Chidambaram rejected the allegations. He also turned the label into a badge of honor for democratic opposition.
The veteran parliamentarian stated that if defending fundamental rights, questioning government policies, and protecting freedom of speech makes someone a ‘Dimagi Naxal’, then every conscious citizen should embrace the tag.
Other senior opposition leaders joined Chidambaram in condemning the Union Minister’s post. They characterized it as an attempt to intimidate dissenters, target civil society, and divert public attention from pressing socio-economic challenges.
