A major fire broke out at a four-storey hotel in West Bengal’s Birbhum district early Monday morning. Seven people died in the incident. Several others suffered serious injuries. The tragic event took place at Hotel Bideshini in the temple town of Tarapith. The fire started in the reception area due to a suspected short circuit. It quickly burnt false ceilings and wall panels. Thick black smoke filled the building and trapped the guests inside. People ran toward the emergency stairs to escape. However, the emergency exit grills were locked tight. Trapped guests screamed for help from balconies, and some jumped to save their lives.

Officials confirmed that all seven victims died from suffocation after inhaling poisonous smoke. The deceased included four pilgrims from Kolkata, two from Bihar, and one local hotel employee.

The injured guests remain under critical care at Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep condolences and announced financial compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
