The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections independently. BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh confirmed the decision during an organizational review meeting. He dismissed widespread rumours of a renewed alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Santhosh directed state leaders to prepare candidates for all 117 assembly seats. The move marks a firm shift toward establishing the BJP as a standalone political force in Punjab.
Putting an End to Akali Dal Alliance Speculation
Political circles had been buzzing with reports of a possible BJP-SAD reunion ahead of the 2027 polls. However, B.L. Santhosh firmly shut down all coalition talks during his Chandigarh visit. He informed party office-bearers that the central leadership has decided to fight alone.
The two parties had parted ways in 2020 over the now-repealed farm laws. Senior leaders noted that contesting independently allows the party to expand its political base freely across every constituency.
Strengthening the Grassroots Cadre Across Rural Punjab
During the strategy sessions, the national leadership outlined a comprehensive roadmap for grassroots expansion. Santhosh urged state unit chief Sunil Jakhar and district presidents to activate booth-level committees immediately.
The party is making a focused effort to connect directly with farming communities, rural workers, and youth. In addition, the state unit will launch statewide public outreach drives to explain central development schemes.
Leaders believe strong ground-level mobilization is essential to build voter trust in rural belts.
Building a Standalone Alternative to AAP and Congress
The BJP aims to project itself as the primary alternative to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress. Party strategists plan to highlight governance lapses, law-and-order challenges, and farm debt issues under the current state administration.
Furthermore, recent inductions of prominent regional leaders have boosted the party’s organizational strength. By going solo, the BJP seeks to shed its historical junior-partner image and contest directly for state power.
